George Mason University is a large, public research university with several campuses in the state. It receives funding from the National Institutes of Health, NASA and other federal agencies for research in science. It has well known programs in public policy, engineering, law, political science, history and more. It has a large number of distinguished alumni and faculty, including two Nobel Prize winners.

Summer Camps at George Mason University

WGMU Summer Radio Camp lets students learn about radio broadcasting with a chance to deejay, write commercials and newscasts.

The Game & Technology Academy runs throughout the summer as Monday – Friday, full day camps on 3D game design; mobile app development; Minecraft; animation; game art; Java programming; C# programming; Skyrim modding; cybersecurity; writing and music for games; and neuroscience. Courses are available for ages 9 to adult. Courses are also available in a completely on-line format. Online classes are live/synchronous, so students can interact with faculty and each other to enhance social learning and collaboration. On site classes bring together STEM + Entrepreneuship, as students are mentored by instructors and faculty from the Mason Game Design Program and the Virginia Serious Game Institute. On site locations are available at the Fairfax and Loudon campuses.

Patriot Debate Institute offers policy, Lincoln-Douglas and public forum formats. There are one-week, two-week and three-week options for residents or commuters.

The Northern Virginia Writing Project Student Summer Institute is a half-day enrichment program for enthusiastic writers seeking to develop their skills. Young writers, from rising grade 5 to 12 welcome!

IFREE Workshop is an experience in experimental economics. It is a FREE program that uses a virtual world for students to understand fundamentals of economics.

Summer Dance offers instruction by leading teachers, choreographers and artistic directors, such as Christopher d’Amboise. It is for dancers ages 15 – 18.

Ovations Summer Strings Academy is for violin, viola, cello and bass players in grades 7 – 12. Summer Musical Showcase is for ages 7 – 18 and focuses on Broadway classics with coaching in voice, dance and acting. There are two sessions of Guitar Workshop, each is a half-day with a choice of morning or afternoon sessions. Students, ages 8 – 12, begin on the ukulele. Students work with School of Music faculty to learn composition techniques. Each week offers a different focus, so students may take one, two or three week. The final week is focused on songwriting. Percussion Workshop includes techniques in Latin, steel pan, drumline, orchestral performance and more. Children’s Choral Camp is a fun, half-day camp for singers in grades 4 – 7.

Film & Video Production Camp is a three-week program. Each day is a half-day with a morning session for students, ages 15 – 18 and afternoon sessions for students, ages 12 – 14. The camp covers every aspect of filmmaking.

Photography Workshops explore traditional darkroom and other techniques. It is for ages 13 – 18. Summer Art Camp is a two-week, half-day session for ages 6 – 12. There is also a collaborative art project for teens running the same week.

Freedom Aquatic & Fitness Center offers day camps for ages 2–15. Camps include sessions on Babysitting, Cooking, Drama, Engineering, Science and more. Sports include In-line Skating, Swim, Biking, Fishing, Rock Climbing, Baseball, Basketball, Boxing, Equestrian, Lacrosse and more. The camp is held in Manassas. Fees vary with program.
