California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) is a small, private university in a suburban setting, near Los Angeles. It offers accredited program in the visual and performing arts. The school was founded by Walt Disney as a “Caltech of the arts”. Beginning in the summer of 1987, CalArts became the host of the state-funded California State Summer School for the Arts program.
California State Summer School for the Arts offers rigorous pre-professional training in the visual and performing arts, creative writing, animation and filmmaking for high school students. It is a program created by the California legislature for California residents, but admits a limited number of non-residents students at a higher tuition. Students study in one of seven departments – animation, creative writing, dance, visual arts, theater, music and film/video. Students may receive college credit.
